Week 6: Growth Mindset
Welcome to Week 6 of Practice Pie — this week’s ingredient is Butter, which represents Pride & Mindset. Just like butter adds richness and depth to a recipe, pride and mindset give flavor and resilience to your child’s music journey.
These days, growth mindset has become something of a buzzword, but it’s an incredibly useful concept for both parents and teachers. A growth mindset is simply the belief that you can get better at something through effort and practice. The opposite is a fixed mindset — the idea that “I’m just not good at that” or “I’m not musical.”
We all have a mix of both. You might think, “I could learn to cook if I tried,” but also, “I’m just not a writer.” In music, the fixed mindset often sounds like: “I’m not musical.” But that’s simply not true. Even prodigies — those rare students who seem naturally gifted — spend countless hours practicing. While everyone has different aptitudes, no one succeeds without putting in the work.
That’s why mindset is so important for young musicians. When students believe they can improve through effort, they approach challenges with curiosity instead of fear. And that belief often starts with you — their parents.
Your words carry more power than you might realize. Kids may not always act like it, but they listen closely to what you say about their music. The way you praise them can help build — or accidentally limit — their mindset.
Instead of saying, “Wow, you’re so talented,” try:
“That piece sounds fantastic — you’ve worked so hard on it.”
“You must be proud of yourself; that was tough, but you stuck with it.”
Or even, “I can tell how much effort you’re putting in — keep going, you’re getting closer every time.”
This subtle shift focuses praise on effort, not talent. It tells your child that improvement comes from perseverance and practice — not from being born with some magical gift.
When kids believe their work matters, they become more confident, more independent, and yes — more musical. That’s the true richness of this week’s ingredient: Butter — Pride & Mindset.
