About Me...

Saxophonist, composer, arranger, bandleader, and award-winning improviser, Jace Frederick, is a Texas-based musician. In his youth, Jace played lead alto in the Kalamazoo Youth Jazz Orchestra while taking lessons from Chicago-based saxophonist, Benjamin Schmidt-Swartz.
But Jace’s love for jazz saxophone continued to grow when he attended educational events like the Seminar music camp at Western Michigan University and the Inside Outside Saxophone
Jace attended Western Michigan University, pursuing a degree in Jazz Studies with a concentration in saxophone.
During Jace’s time at WMU, he learned how to become a well rounded musician and saxophonist while studying with Dr. Andrew Rathbun. Jace had the opportunity to share the stage with world-renowned guest artists like Chris Potter and Michael Mayo.

My Favorite Things...

WMU also offered the opportunity to be in many elite ensembles, such as the Advanced Jazz Ensemble, where Jace gained experience as an arranger and leader in a small, fast-paced combo setting. WMU Jazz Orchestra is another high-level ensemble Jace enjoyed playing in, where he picked up secondary instruments such as flute, clarinet and piano.
Jace has recently moved to Denton, TX, where he spends his time teaching and
performing. Jace has a real passion for music and strives to help the original musician bloom in all of his students. With just under eight years of teaching experience in private and group settings, Jace is excited to work with students of all ages.
